For the last four years we have participated in a weekly recreational dance group. The style is "contra dancing" and our group is a community of people from various walks of life and ages ranging from 8 to 80 years old. You can find out more about our local group at: indycontra.org
Often contra is described in comparison to square dancing. You have a partner and you dance with other couples but unlike square dancing where you dance in... well... a square, contra dancing is danced in lines.
While it is a "couples" dance you don't have to bring a partner because it is customary to alternate partners each dance. Gender rolls of "lead" and "follow" are also not rigid and everyone can dance with anyone. If you haven't tried contra dancing, you should.
All and all it is great fun and we've enjoyed having it as a part of our life. Most enjoyable... contra dancing is world wide. There are contra dance groups just about everywhere you travel. And we're looking forward to getting off trail to dance with some of the communities along and near the trail's path.
If you're someone who is part of one of these groups, let us know when and where you dance and we might just see you there!
